Verify candidate emails before outreach (or pay for it later)
Why recruiters should verify candidate emails before outreach, how bounce rates damage sender domains, and how to batch-verify a shortlist for cents with Bouncer through Scout Mesh.
Every contact database sells you emails. None of them will tell you how many are dead. People change jobs, companies rename domains, inboxes get decommissioned — and the record that was accurate when it was indexed quietly goes stale. If you send to those addresses, you don't just lose a candidate: you damage your ability to reach every future candidate.
Why bounces hurt more than they look
Mailbox providers score sending domains by behaviour, and hard bounces are one of the loudest negative signals. A sustained bounce rate above roughly 2% starts moving your domain toward spam folders — for everyone in your company, not just the recruiter who sent the batch. Recovering a burned domain takes weeks of careful warming. The arithmetic is brutal: one careless 200-email blast into an unverified list can cost more deliverability than a year of verification fees.
Why verification should be independent
Some databases label their own emails "verified." Treat that claim the way you would treat a seller's home inspection. The provider that sold you the address has an obvious interest in calling it valid, and its verification reflects the state of the record when it was built, not today. An independent checker has no such stake: it tests the address now and reports what it finds — deliverable, risky, or undeliverable.
The workflow
- Source candidates and reveal emails from any database — ContactOut, Lusha, or People Data Labs.
- Before anything reaches your outreach tool, run the list through Bouncer — single checks mid-conversation or one batch call for the whole shortlist.
- Send only to addresses labeled deliverable. For risky addresses, decide deliberately: a catch-all domain may be worth one careful attempt; an unknown mailbox on a burned-out domain is not.
Through Scout Mesh, verification costs $0.008 per email at Bouncer's source rate. A 50-candidate shortlist verifies for $0.40; a thousand-contact list for $8. There is no cheaper insurance in recruiting.
Doing it conversationally
Because Scout Mesh exposes Bouncer alongside the data sources in one MCP gateway, Claude or ChatGPT can fold verification into the sourcing conversation itself: "reveal emails for these five and verify them" is one instruction, not a CSV round-trip between three tools. The assistant reveals, verifies, and reports back which addresses are safe to use — before you have opened your outreach tool. The full workflow is covered in how to source candidates with Claude.
